Using lots of selvages. Really anything a couple of centimetres long is being used - and saved - for this work in progress.

Here's what I've been working on.

I'm now taking up three tables in my house. One for my sewing machine, one just across for my cutting board and fabrics of interest (!) and now the dining table for laying out the blocks.

Look what I made today. It's for Danielle. I'm in a quilt group on flickr with her. She's going to be making a quilt with tiny houses and trees, all sashed in lots of white. It's 4 inches high. I think I need to make one too.

Two weeks in

We're two weeks in to a month without the kids. My parents took them on a road trip through Victoria and South Australia, and up to the Northern Territory. It's so quiet without them. I still find myself waking up and thinking that they're asleep in the other rooms. Or thinking that I hear them stirring in the middle of the night.

I rang the kids last night. Ben said he was looking forward to going out at night with grandad and a torch and ripping the heads off grasshoppers. Alice has a grasshopper plague (it's been ongoing for a while) and they're eating mum and dad's fruit trees and vege garden. Ben said it's fun. At night, they're immobile, and Ben and Andrew say they catch at least 50 each.

St Kilda cake shops

I introduced Mark to the St Kilda strip of cake shops in Melbourne. It was great fun being a tourist.

I chose macaroons because one of the blogs I follow talks about them constantly (and because I figured that egg white wouldn't be all that fattening!!) Pretty but tasteless, really...Mark chose a gloopy thing.

Melbourne street art

We went to Melbourne for a long weekend without the kids, and I found myself taking loads of photos of street art. Lots of quirky pictures, lots of colour.

Spoonflower Christmas present

Mum bought fabric from my favourite online fabric shop - Spoonflower. She ordered fabric from them to make me a set of placemats for Christmas. Just looove the sushi fabric she chose. The other side is fabulous too - Kaldor??

Coffee and rhubarb

We bought each other a coffee maker for Christmas this year. And my sister-in-law bought me a wonderful Rhubarb cup and saucer. It fits perfectly. Thanks Debbie!

Hail storm

Amazing hail storm at our place this week. Some of the  hail stones were the size of golf balls. It ripped tennis ball-sized holes in our gazebo.

Kids on a road trip

The kids headed off on a road trip with their grandparents this morning. They'll be away for a month. Ben just wanted to sit in the car and read his new library book - I had to pull him out to get a photo of him.

Ben's truck

Ben has been working for days, making himself a paper mache truck. It's drying and then he's going to paint it red.

He'd been making it using sticky tape and paper. Grandma showed him how to make glue from cornflour and do paper mache. This might be a way for me to cut out the rolls of sticky tape I buy for his projects!

Gladioli

The gladioli in my garden are going crazy - there's been a real break to the drought.

Pumpkin patch

Ben and his grandma planted pumpkin seeds today. Mum had a fantasically-producing pumpkin and brought us the seeds. Mum bought me the compost bin in the photo yesterday, I've stuffed it full of all the clippings that were lying there.

They added Charlie Carp (fish fertiliser), potash, fertiliser and soil wetta - these pumpkins should go crazy.

Second Christmas dinner

We had a second Christmas dinner on New Years Day. I tried and tried to take a good photo of the boys. Digital photos have changed things so much. Used to be a time when kids wouldn't dare pull silly faces, or it would waste their parents' precious film...
