Cushion tutorial

Jodi asked for a tutorial for these cushions. Hope it all makes sense, Jodi.

Here's my quilted rectangle.

1. Start off with a quilted rectangle. I had mine quilted, I'm not good at machine quilting, and I wanted these to look bespoke; professional not amateurville!

2. Cut off the extra wadding and bind each short side. You don't need to neaten the edges, they'll be included in the seam allowance soon.

3. Then fold the quilt, to allow for a good tuck inside, to fit in the cushion insert. And sew along the side seams.

4. That's it - turn your cushion inside out, and measure it up to get the size of your cushion insert.

5. Stuff your cushion insert and tuck it inside your cushion, tucking it under one of the flaps.

2. Bind each short side. I sewed it on the wrong side, then flipped, tucked the binding under and sewed again on the right side.

Folded and sewing along each side seam. See how big I made the tuck - almost the entire length of the cushion.

Close up of another rectangle. See the quilted feet all over it?

The finished cushion - at Mark's work.

Glow sticks and a pinch of imagination

We went out to a fireworks show. The family next to us had cornered the market in glow sticks, glowing medusa hair - the works. I think they took pity on our two families next to them with nothing.

They gave Ben and his friend Alasdair a whole ball of glow sticks. They found so much to do with their new toy.

Helped make the drive home so much better. I'd look around, and they'd have glow stick claws. Then I'd look around again, and they'd have a glow stick hat - with the green stick ready to suck out my brain!

Honestly the family next to us - once it was dark we could find our way back just following their glow!!

New signage

The signage for Mark's work went up yesterday. He had a week or two or working with dropcloths and paper against the windows. It was worth the wait - it's looking great.

Trip to the coast

Ben and Andrew (and dad) made a sandcastle.
We had a long weekend this weekend. Went to the coast, and enjoyed a last burst of summer.

Lots of digging - sometimes the waves were too strong.

Our front yard, right on the lake.

Mark reading the paper this morning, and our view.

Mum's lesson

I'm making cushions for my husband's work. Told mum and she's made a teeny model cushion, a teeny model insert for the cushion, and a little strip of binding - to show me exactly how to do them. She's made them for years, and her method is tried and true. Put them on top of her envelope, to show how small they are!! The cushions are off being quilted right now, lots of footprints (my husband is a podiatrist).

School's craft group

One thing I love about the kids' school is the photos they put in their newsletter. The mums have a craft group and make these gorgeous felt dolls.

Twee's window

Window Block for Lucinda - Busy Bees March

This block is by someone called Twee on Flickr. Here's a link to her page -

She talks about the block, says there's a flower box under the window. I also just love the fabric she's found to surround the window - looks like old, old paintwork on wood. Others commenting on the photo think it looks like stucco. Either way, it's loovely.
