Buck teeth

Gotta love the lolly teeth that came in Ben's Xmas stocking. We've had buck teeth and vampire teeth.

Clock

I've been meaning to photograph this gorgeous clock that Andrew made at school. It's solid, he spent forever smoothing it down, and it's a lovely piece of timber.

To do

Nyawh. Andrew's first to do list. He's trying for a job at Woolworths, he's bought some headphones for himself and now he just wants books on quantum physics - as you do!!!

Hopping mouse

Andrew has brought home his school projects. He made this gorgeous hopping mouse. It's a marsupial mouse, essentially a mouse-sized version of a kangaroo.

Parliament

I have three Australian Parliament tablecloths home at the moment! They're old stock donated to my kids' school and I volunteered to wash them after the class dinner.

They're thick and white embossed with the fleur de lis pattern. There's faint black market pen in the hem to say what size table each will fit. I wonder what discussions and shenanigans happened at these tables.

Camels

Look what I saw when I stepped out of work today!

Cube

Andrew and I tried for ages to try and make a cube out of these blocks. We failed, failed and failed. I laughed so much I cried!

Tiny Dancer 2012

Tiny Dancer 2012 by Bumble Beans
Tiny Dancer 2012, a photo by Bumble Beans on Flickr.

One of my blogger mates asked whether I was inspired by Bumble Beans. I didn't know what she meant, then realised that I'm following Bumble Bean's quilts on Flickr. Here's one of them. Isn't it amazing!

Block

I think this is my favourite do far.

Starting

I've been getting up at 5 this week and sewing a block each morning then off to the gym or a run.

Let's see how long this burst of enthusiasm lasts.

The last few quilts I've started have been duds and I've given up on them. But I have my quilt group coming round this afternoon so ill talk to them about ways I could rescue the failure quilts!

Healing Hugs at Semaphore Adelaide

My beautiful niece and my nephew's long-time girlfriend feature in this cute healing hugs video. Rachel is the one in purple near the beginning.

Gorgeous, gorgeous brights. I think I bought the most colour-dense, vibrant fabrics I could find.

New quilt

Here's the quilt that has caught my eye. I've had it bookmarked for a couple of years and today is the day to start.

Brights

I bought a new stack of brights today. I'm about to start on a Freddy Moran/ Gwen Marston-inspired star quilt.

Ben's note

Ben wrote an 'anonymous' note yesterday, put it our letterbox and waited for someone to find it and be as surprised as the rest of us.

It's all about finding blood under the trampoline where the guinea pigs used to be. It was part of the dream he had a couple of nights ago.

Our two spoilt guinea pigs roam free under our super sized trampoline. We don't mod the lawn and the spend their days munching and lying in the sun.

Tall

Ben is thrilled. He's finally taller than grannie.

Adelaide

Andrew has been chosen to go to Adelaide to represent his school in ice hockey. I'm so proud, he only started it this year.

And what's more - he was up against kids in years 10 and 11 and was selected for the first division.

He's so very low key about the whole thing, but I know he's excited to be going and it'll be such a great opportunity.

Ben's wishes

Ben is doing a wishes and wonders section at school at the moment. He needed to write down his biggest wishes. He has written - be able to fly, have my own couch, be on the surface of Pluto and breathe underwater.

But his biggest wish of all, the golden wish, is to be taller.

Star wars

I saw this great take on the stick figure car stickers today - Star Wars!

Looks like there's a mum, dad, child and two robo looking dogs.

Birthday

Mum bought the best card for Andrew for his birthday today - baked beans! He just loves them.

She made fantastic placemats from the rainbow dyeing that Andrew did with mum in July. They're in the photo.

Ice hockey goal

Andrew scored his first goal in ice hockey on Friday. Not bad, because its a casual team and all the rest are adults. Andrew's 15 today.

Sewing

I went to Newbury St in Boston yesterday. Just loved the huge display of sewing machines at Sanford college. It was about 10 metres long. Also loved the sale at www.anthropologie.com

Boston Common

I walked through Boston Common yesterday and there were squirrels! Eating acorns! I took lots of photos, talk about revealing yourself as a tourist. Everyone else raced past.

Westborough houses

The next few posts will be about my trip to the US.

I spent the day around Westborough - west of Boston - where my friend lives.

Just adored the beautiful houses. I took so many photos of the houses - they're so well-maintained and many were decorated for Halloween. And the flags - on houses, shops, decorating trucks...

To sum up my day in Westborough - quaint wooden houses, flags and pumpkins.

Japanese

I do feel for Andrew's maths teacher. Apparently Andrew has been writing his name in Japanese on his maths assignment. Michael the maths teacher said he knows that the assignment is from Andrew because it's written in Japanese!

100 per cent

Andrew got full marks for his maths assignment on permutations and combinations. So proud of him!

5am

Well it's 5am on Saturday and I've just started sewing the binding on Elena's quilt. I fly to the US on Tuesday. Before then I'll have to sew the binding down, sew on the label and sew buttons on each petal oh and pack.

Such a nice feeling to have finished work for three weeks.

Andrew's picture

My 14-year-old Andrew has drawn the most wonderful picture. Each little squiggle is a word.

Elena's quilt

I got the two birthday quilts back from the quilter yesterday. Just in time because I fly out to the US on Tuesday. While I was waiting, I got the label, the binding and the buttons ready. And tried not to panic! Each petal around the quilt will be sewn down with a button. Thank goodness we have a long weekend here starting Friday.

Cursive E

I asked the quilter to quilt big cursive, swirly letter 'E's all over. Love this one because it's bang in the middle of one of the white blocks.

Today's progress

Got up early this morning and finished the quilt top for the new baby, Hannah. I'm going to see my friend and her new baby tomorrow, so I'll have something to show her now!

Progress

My husband was out last night so I quilted. I looked at the time and realised it was 10.30.

So now I have all the blocks done and I've decided on the sashing. The colours don't show up so beautifully in this photo - it was an overcast morning.

Baby quilt

Flowers for Hannah

Hannah's quilt

My friend Danielle has just had a new baby girl, Hannah. I started a quilt for her yesterday. I never know what to make for a baby quilt.

Eco camp

Andrew was away on camp all last week. The kids took gardening tools and gloves and worked hard. They were helping to bring a very over-used farm back to being a sustainable piece of bush.

It was so denuded of greenery and in such a bad state that even the wildlife had left - no birds.

One of the jobs was to make seed balls. Andrew and his classmates made a huge slurry of grass seeds compost and mud. Then they rolled it into balls. The balls are scattered across the property It protects the seeds from just being eaten by birds. Then, when it rains, the seeds germinate with the help of their capsule of dirt and compost.

Felting

There's a craft morning at my kids' school every week. These are two of the things the mums have made - they featured in this week's school newsletter.

The make lots of things including nativity scenes for the spring fair.

Really i should take some time off work learn to felt. Aren't they gorgeous!

New couch

We've been out weekend after weekend tracking down a new couch. We've both agreed on one - we'll be getting it in a dark gray blue. 10 weeks to go now and counting...

Love that the back and side supports cantilever up and down.

MacBeth

I wonder if this shadow box piece in the library is about the witch scene in MacBeth?

Love this piece in the school library. It brings to mind ochre and Indigenous art.
